My name is Tarsoly Gergely (family name: Tarsoly, given name: Gergely), born and raised in Hungary, currently working as an Assistant Professor at Konkuk University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. My current research focuses on semiconducting materials and devices, I mostly work on phototransistors and other photosensitive devices. I am teaching general chemistry to engineering students and physical chemistry - chemical thermodynamics to chemistry majors.
Previously, I have worked in the field of analytical chemistry: during my Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. I utilized ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS for the analysis of inorganic and organic samples, and worked out the limitations of a novel Low-Z XRF instrument for halogen content measurement. I spent an internship, and later worked at the Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Hungary. There I performed peptide analysis using HR-MS and developed and validated HPLC and LC-MS methods for the measurement of active pharmaceutical ingredients and specific contaminants. I pivoted to materials science for my PhD studies, which I have pursued at Konkuk University in Seoul. I also studied semiconductors as a post-doctoral researcher at both Konkuk University and Chungbuk National University. I have published numerous research papers and presented my findings at conferences in English, Korean and Hungarian.
Besides chemistry, I am interested in computing, programming and machine learning. I am familiar with the GNU/Linux operating system, I run Arch Linux on my home computer, and run Debian on rented VPSs (like the one this website is hosted on). I am an avid proponent of Free Software and Open Source. In programming, I have been working on personal projects in python, mostly with the pandas database library. I am also interested in video editing, I have developed a workflow using only Free and Open Source Software to create my projects.
In general, I like to try out new things and learn about interesting subjects, which have led me down on long journeys. For example, after I learned about the how the Korean writing system was developed, I ended up learning the language and applying for a scholarship in Seoul.
I have published research findings in various international scientific journals, and presented in national and international conferences.
